Hello, best wishes from Finland!

I am new to this list, made my subscription yesterday. But not very new with Logo and MicroWorlds, just coming back after break of half a decade in using Logo (and later MicroWorlds) almost daily.

I belonged to a group of parents, who founded the first computer club in a Finnish elementary school in Helsinki 1982. Twenty years ago! We used Apple Logo with children and teachers for years, we had a floor turtle etc. It was a fantastic period of time in my life too. We wrote two books about using computers and specially Logo with young pupils. We trained teachers in Helsinki area, also many parents learned Logo to join as instructors of new clubs etc. We even visited MIT in 1985.

After I had left my duties in the club, they got MircoWorlds later there too. I also purchased the software to use at home for pleasure. My piece of MicroWorlds is 2.0 from 1996. What's the updated version now? What's new in it? Should I upgrade my piece of software?

Then from 1990 to spring 2001 I worked in the Helsinki University of Technology for Freenet Finland, a community based network for Finnish schools - students, teachers and parents.

I'd like to learn from you all what's MicroWorlds today, experiences of using it at any level of schools, success stories, projects, new software, books, discussion groups ... what ever. First I'll try to find couple of elementary schools, which were interested in my introduction to MicroWorlds and Logo as such.

I'd also like to know if there are any Finnish teachers or other people on the list or teachers from other Nordic countries. I am not a teacher, so I don't know very much about daily computer use in schools in Finland today besides of the over all network activities I worked for.

Sincerely yours

Heikki Korpinen

  • To save an attachment to your computer, PC users should right-click (Mac users, click and hold the mouse button) on the link and then choose 'save target as' from the pop-up menu. A window will then pop up in which you can choose a location for the file.
