Thank you! I had tried without renaming it but could only get it to work if I
moved it to the page I was on. I can see that this will work.

Sure!
Give it a UNIQUE name, a name that isn't used on any other page. For
example, call it MYUNIQUETEXT. Then, on whatever page you are, you
can use commands such as:
show myuniquetext
show pick myuniquetext
show item 1 myuniquetext
setmyuniquetext "hello
if member? "hello myuniquetext [dothis]
