I did. The tips page has many has very interesting information. But
it is organized as a sequences of postings and in paragraph format.
So I think it is a bit hard to extract the tips from it. It is also
very long.

I think a good tip for them here would be to show them how to use
bullets.

I agree with your critique of the page. I need to figure out a better way to have it organized, since I was also new to Wiki posting etc, I did not have a specific plan but we designed as we went through it. Since I wanted the students to have ownership, I let them have total control with no input form me, over the summer I will take a look at the wiki and think about better displays of information.

The students are used to Blog posting and so many took their cues from that. I only wish I taught the classes more than once or twice a week and could really cover more of everything with greater detail.

I see how writing their nuggets of knowledge on a public web page would
empower the kids, and teach them a way to construct knowledge
colaboratively.

I noticed that many wanted to sign their ideas, mentioning their
own names.

I wonder if the kids actually take the time to read what others have
written and use it for their projects, or if they prefer to get
information from sources prepared by adults.

The kids take (took) it very seriously and listen to each other. My classroom and lessons are set up so that the answers to questions do not come from me only. I teach 25 to 35 students at a time in my lab, and there is no way that I CAN answer all the questions at once anyway! I provide multiple ways of accessing information for problem solving and the Wiki has become one of those ways.

I appreciate all the input and comments and hope to be able to improve upon using a Wiki in the classroom environment this coming school year.

If any body has other examples of class/student-created wikis please post the urls, thanks.

  • To save an attachment to your computer, PC users should right-click (Mac users, click and hold the mouse button) on the link and then choose 'save target as' from the pop-up menu. A window will then pop up in which you can choose a location for the file.
